Tory Burch has finally unveiled her new fragrance, the first-ever from the brand, and it’s definitely been worth the wait. Clean, fresh, sparkly, and floral, it beautifully blends masculine and feminine notes to make for one very magical, modern scent. Speaking exclusively to Savoir Flair, Burch reveals what inspired her to branch out into the world of beauty and how memory played such an important part in creating the perfume.
What made you want to branch out into fragrance?
I have always loved fragrance and have been thinking about moving into the beauty space for a while, but we were focused on establishing ourselves first. It’s a natural extension for our brand.
What was your favorite part of creating a fragrance?
I love the alchemy of fragrance, the whole process of creating a scent. Choosing the notes and seeing how they work together is a lot of fun and extremely interesting.
Have you always had a passion for scent?
Yes, fragrance is a big part of my personal history. My parents each had their favorite scents, which are so tied to my memories.
What’s your earliest memory of scent?
It’s hard to say, but the most vivid is sampling the different fragrances my mother kept on her vanity table. When I was young, I used to try them all on (at the same time, of course) and then get thrown directly into the bath!
What inspired the design of the bottle?
The design is a nod to the tray of vintage perfume bottles and atomizers on my mother’s vanity table. We wanted something beautiful that you would want to display. The bottle includes many of my favorite design elements: clean, beveled edges and a signature fretwork top.
How did you choose the notes in the fragrance?
When we decided to create a fragrance, we spent a lot of time thinking about what it should be — a balance of femininity and tomboy, citrus and floral, grounded and graceful. I knew that vetiver had to be at the heart of it as my father wore it and my brothers have all worn it. Even I’ve worn it! It’s traditionally a masculine scent, but I think it crosses over to women’s fragrance well. Vetiver is balanced by citrus notes and feminine florals such as peony, which brings me back to all the summer days I spent as my mother’s assistant gardener.
Who is your ultimate beauty icon and why?
My mother, Reva Robinson. She is my inspiration, my muse, and, to this day, the most beautiful woman I have ever known.
When do you feel your most beautiful?
When I am happy; beauty comes from within. If you feel great, it shows.
What type of woman do you envisage wearing your fragrance?
As with our ready-to-wear and accessories, I don’t think about one woman, but about women, active women of all ages around the world who love fashion… and fragrance!
Describe the scent in three words.
Feminine, tomboy, unexpected.
Is this just the start of more Tory Burch beauty products to come?
Yes – we will be introducing new scents this spring.
